Nativity Scene

Our church asked families to make a Nativity Scene out of gingerbread. Well, this is mine. It is entirely made out of food, with a little help from a hot glue gun (to get everything to stand up and stay up). I was lucky to find a cookie cutter set for the people and animals, but I did cut the manger myself. I made the gingerbread from scratch using a Southern Living's gingerbread recipe. Personally, I do not like gingerbread, so it did not taste that great to me (I think it's the molasses). I used crushed graham crackers for the dirt and dyed coconut for the hay.

Christmas Card - 2011

I made our Christmas card again this year. I must have made about 15 different designs, but finally decided on this. I even went back and forth on color photos, but decided the black and white looked best with the green and black. Merry Christmas to All!

Avery - No more Top Braces

Avery got her top braces off this week. She was so excited. She does have a retainer now, and can't wait to get the bottom braces off, which will hopefully be in a couple of months.

Sterling's 6th Birthday Party

We celebrated Sterling's 6th birthday last weekend. We always have the party a few weeks early since it falls so close to Christmas (his actual birthday is the 21st).

This was one of the crafts. Each child made an igloo. This is very easy. I used a styrofoam bowl and plate. I went ahead and cut the "door" out. Then they just stuck marshmallows on the bowl with frosting.

Riding in the Rental Car

I was rear-ended in of all places, the car rider line at school! It was not any major damage, but it was enough to need repair. So, we had a rental car for 5 days. The kids enjoyed the mini-van. It was reallly nice to have the automatic sliding doors. They even made up a song. . . "Riding in the rental car Ya ya ya!" They would sing this as we were riding down the road. :-)

Avery - School Musical

Just before Thanksgiving, the entire fourth grade held a a musical called "Dig It". Avery's class were dressed as skeletons. I helped with the skeleton costumes, the backdrop, and skeleton makeup for all 3 performances. I spent many hours tracing and cutting out bones!

Rocky the Rhino

Sterling brought home "Rocky" the rhino for a weekend. We enjoyed the weekend with Rocky. He even went to church with us. This is a class project where everyone takes Rocky home and writes about it in a book.

Avery - Field Trip

Avery's class took a Field Trip to a local park / ranch. It was a park I didn't even know existed; however, it was very interesting with beautiful scenes and houses. And, the kids enjoyed the day and even learned something.

Storybook Parade - Sterling

The entire Kindergarten dressed as a character from their favorite storybook and had a parade around the school. Parents and the other grades were able to watch. Well, since Sterling loves "Tacky the Penguin" books lately and he was a penguin for Halloween, he dressed as Tacky!

PUMPKIN BALLOON POP

I saw this on marthastewart.com and had put on my Pinterest a while back. I was anxious to make it. I filled the 3 of the balloons with $1.00 bills. The remaining balloons were filled with fake money or erasers. This was actually pretty easy and worked well with the "T" quilting pins.

The kids really enjoyed popping the balloons and looking for the money! I used a plastic toothpick for the popper.

I did not get the greatest picture of the candy table, but it was really cute. And, I didn't get any pictures of the food. Basically, we had "kid friendly" food--Bagel Bites, chicken nuggets, sandwiches, popcorn, cookies, and green punch.

Sterling's class took a field trip to a local farm that has lots of activities--animals, corn maze, hayride, and pumpkin patch.

Sterling was a little afraid to feed the goat. He dropped the feed right on the ground.

It was a busy day for me. Avery had her Field Day the same afternoon as the field trip, so I had to rush back to the school to watch Avery. I missed the hayride and other events. But, Sterling said he had a great time.

Oh Let's Go Fly a Kite!

It was extra windy this past Saturday. Avery decided to make her own kite. It looked really cute; however, she really needed a longer string to get it flying. But, she and Ian had a great time trying to fly the kite! They somehow figured that if they stood on something (the stone bench), it just might fly!

Big Fat Lip

Last Thursday afternoon, Ian walked into my bedroom and fell and hurt his mouth. He bit through his lip and the front tooth and gum line were also injured. I'm not really sure how he fell or what actually happened. There was so much blood--I've never seen one of my children bleed so much. I was really afraid we were going to end up at the ER, but thankfully the bleeding stopped after 10 minutes. He still might have damaged his tooth--it's kind of a wait and see thing. The lip is healing quite fast, and he is now eating normally.

This is a zoomed in picture 3 days after the accident. He had been playing in the sandbox, so there is some extra sand and dirt around his mouth. This shows the tooth and gum line.

Computers!

I was ready to scream and cry last week. . .

Two weeks ago, my external hard drive crashed. This was ok, since it was just my backup for all my files. However, it did have all my digital scrapbooking stuff on it (and I do not have that on my computer because of the size of the files), so last week I took it to a local computer store to have the data backed up and put on a new external hard drive. I also took the laptop in because lately it has been acting a little funny. And, we had an older computer crash on us over a year ago. A friend had told me it needed a new hard drive, so I thought I would take that in as well, so the kids could have their own computer to play on (and I wouldn't have to worry so much about it if something went wrong). So, all three items were at the computer store--external hard drive, laptop, and older desktop computer. I was ok with all of this because I still had my main computer that was a little over a year old. And, all was good with that computer.

Then, last Wednesday night we had a little storm blow through. There were several little power surges. All was still ok; however, Friday morning I went to turn on my computer and nothing would happen. NO power and it would not turn on at all. I was still ok at this point because I figured that maybe it just had a bad power supply (we had that happen several years ago to another computer). So, Friday morning, I took the computer in to the computer shop and had to pay a rush fee, so I could hopefully get the computer back that afternoon. Well, I was not so lucky. The computer guy called me that afternoon. BAD News . . . My main business computer did not just have a bad power supply, but it also had a blown motherboard. The laptop also had a bad motherboard that is about to go (that's why it acts up sometimes). And, the old desktop that I wanted to fix for the kids had something else wrong. Basically, all 3 computers were not worth repairing! The external hard drive was ok and they could retrieve the data from it, but it would take a while because it gets hot and shuts down--so it's a slow process.

The biggest issue is we desperately need a computer to run our business, and Saturdays I have to do payroll, and it's also near the end of the month (time for invoices). We also need to respond to customer e-mails and requests. Well, Friday afternoon we rushed out and bought 2 new computers--one for the business and one for a backup and that the kids can play on. I then had to take the new computer to the computer shop so they could begin transferring the files from the old computer to the new computer.

We finally got the new computer back late Saturday afternoon. And, then my work began. I had to install all the programs (Microsoft Office, Publisher, Quickbooks, etc.), set up the printer and begin locating all the files to make sure everything got transferred. I'm still searching for some stuff, but most everything appears to have transferred ok, it's just in a different folder than before. I also had to upgrade our Quickbooks (more $) because our old 2009 isn't supported by Windows 7 (which is on the new computers). And, I still haven't completed all the installs on the backup computer.

My biggest lesson in all of this is you need one of these!

We had our computers all on surge protectors; however, I have since learned that is not enough. This is what most likely caused the motherboard and power supply to go. You really need the battery backup. So, when there are power surges or the power goes out, the battery backup goes to work and shuts down your computer safely for you. And, I now recognize the importance of backup. I was doing my part in that area, but now I think I want to backup my backup!

First Day of School 2011

We had a great first day of school this year. Sterling started Kindergarten and Avery is in 4th grade. We or "I" should say that I was ready. We really needed to get back in a routine or regular schedule because with 3 kids and work, it's almost a necessity!

Sterling had a big growth spurt over the summer. Now he looks so tall compared to the kids in his class.

Such a big boy. . .I didn't think I was going to cry, but seeing him sitting in his chair and saying goodbye was hard, so I did have some tears! :)

Here is Avery outside her classroom. She is in a portable building, as is all of 4th grade. When I walked into her portable, it reminded me so much of my 6th grade year, when I was in portables in Austin. They even smelled the same and looked a little "old". It is going to be different this year with her being in portables--they have to go inside for water and bathroom breaks. But, she is thankful to have her friend, Taylor, in her class!

San Antonio - August 2011

We made our 2nd trip to San Antonio for the summer. This time we went with Juan's Mom and Dad and Juan's brother and his family. We stayed at one of my favorite places. On the day we arrived, I went to HEB and stocked the kitchen for the 3 days we were there. We actually ended up not eating out, which Juan loved. The only bummer was I had to cook, so not a totally relaxing vacation for me.

Ian would have been happy just to play in the sand all day!

Hair Cuts

As summer is winding down, we are checking off our Back to School list and one of the items--Hair Cuts! I had to post this picture of Ian. This was the first time I took him to a "salon" and not the kiddie cut place where he would sit in a car or firetruck. He was so serious the entire time. He sat up very straight in the chair and hardly moved. It was quite funny. And, he was so proud to get his hair washed in the big sink. He really looks like Sterling in this picture.

Summer Fun - Swim Lessons

Avery and Sterling have been taking swim lessons throughout the summer.

Sterling is still very fearful of the water. I'm not sure why--maybe we left him in floaties or the swim vest too long. But, he sometimes panics in the water. He is improving, but his progress has been slow. These are not the greatest photos--taken with my phone and through the glass.

Avery has made great progress this summer; however, I think she would have done a little better had she had the same coach at every lesson. But, I am confident now she can swim on her own, and I don't have to watch her every minute. The only thing she needs to work on is her backstroke--she tires out a bit and has a hard time coordinating her arms and legs. I need to get some pictures of her to post here.

The summer is winding down, but Sterling and Avery both say they would like to continue swimming when school starts.

Baby Shower

I helped my mom give a baby shower. And, I had to post a picture of this YUMMY cake from a local bakery. It is a 10" cake that they say feeds 14-20--it's more like 50 (there are two layers). They did a great job matching the cake to the invitation I made.

Avery, Sterling & Ian had a great time playing at Gaga's house. And, Sterling was SO proud of this slice of pizza his Pa bought him. He carried it around most of the afternoon until it was finally eaten (by him and Ian).

Summer Fun - Making Bubble Gum

After being cooped up in the house (due to the Strep Throat & Hand, Foot, & Mouth), the kids were bored. So, I thought we try to make Bubble Gum with this kit we bought.

It was quite messy, but they really had a fun time making the gum. It was pretty easy to make, but we only had one flavor (blueberry) that turned out tasty. The rest were not so good. And, we had the best luck just making gum balls.

Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease / Strep Throat

Sunday morning after church, we picked up the kids from my parent's house. Ian was very clingy, and my mom said he was very grouchy all weekend and didn't eat much. And, she thought he might have had a fever on Friday night. I noticed he had a bunch of bites (or what I thought) were ant bites all over his feet, hands, and legs. He kept complaining that his feet hurt. He was miserable all day Sunday and into the night. The rash was spreading all over his little body. They are turning into little blisters, and he is very itchy. He would not sit still very long for me to get good pictures. . .

We began preparing for Avery to go to camp on Monday. She was all packed and ready to go. But, in the night she woke up with a horrible headache and fever.

So, we headed to the pediatrician on Monday for Avery and Ian's appointment. While we were there, Sterling started complaining his throat hurt. Turns out that Avery and Sterling both have strep throat. And, Ian has hand, foot, and mouth disease. Ian's is a viral infection that just has to run its course. The pediatrician said the rash can last for 7 days, and he is contagious. And just as we were returning from the doctor and entering the neighborhood, Sterling started throwing up. Avery later threw up, but I think it was from the antibiotic.

So, we are stuck at the house and sadly, Avery is missing camp. She was so looking forward to going to camp with her friend, Taylor. The camp offered to reschedule for next week, but Avery is not comfortable going by herself. I feel very bad for Avery. . .her birthday did not turn out as planned, and now this. I told her that maybe we could do a mother/daughter camp in the fall.

Mr. & Mrs. F

For the first time in a very long time, Juan and I spent the weekend without the kids. The kids spent the weekend with their grandparents.

Juan and I had a wonderful dinner Friday night at Perry's. We had made reservations and the waiter kept calling us Mr. & Mrs. F. Juan pulled a joke on the waiter and told him we weren't married and that I wasn't Mrs. F. He tried telling him we were on a first date! He started apologizing for assuming, and then we laughed. The food was delicious. We had Calamari for our appetizer. Juan had the Surf & Turf (steak & lobster tail) and I had pecan crusted salmon. We did not have dessert, but we each had a latte. Very yummy food!

After dinner, we went to the movies and watched a very crazy movie, "Bad Teacher". It was silly, but funny!

Saturday, I spent most of the day by myself. I got my hair cut and Summer highlights. It was nice to have a little time to ourselves, but we did miss our kids. It was sure quiet around here, and the house stayed clean!

San Antonio - July 2011

We took our annual summer trip to San Antonio.

ON THE ROAD - The kids complain about the cramped space in dad's company car, but we save on gas!

We drove into San Antonio on Monday morning and stopped at the RiverWalk. We had lunch and walked around a little.

We stayed at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort for the first time. We had fun, but we will be going back to the Wild Oak. We just had a much better experience at the Wild Oak, especially for the money. We spent most of our time at the pool / river. Avery, Sterling, and Ian had a blast going around the slow "river". It was perfect for kids--not too fast or rough.

The kids also had a blast rolling down the hills of the golf course one evening.

Unfortunately, I did not get that many pictures. I even took my "good" camera and did not take one picture with it! What a waste!

4th of July

We went to a local mall to watch the fireworks on the 4th. Avery, Sterling, and Ian enjoyed watching the fireworks.

And, I played around with the settings on my camera--I had never taken fireworks pictures before. I didn't get the greatest pictures. I really need a different lens and tripod, but I did learn how to adjust the settings on my camera and was able to try different shutter speeds, etc.

Ian would laugh every time a firework went off.

Roughing It - Camping

We took a camping trip this past weekend with my parents. I'm not sure what we were thinking--it was SO HOT!

We stayed at a park that had "cabins" that you could rent for the night. It's basically a screened in shelter with bunk beds. There was electricity, a hose bib, and a community bathroom down the road. We brought fans, and there is a ceiling fan with a light.

The beds were SO hard on your back. We really needed air mattresses, but the kids didn't seem to mind--all but Ian that is. He had a hard time going to sleep, and he woke up at 3:00 a.m. telling me, "Ready to go, I'm hot."

You can barely see the lake from the cabin. The kids went swimming--the water was so warm (I did not like swimming in it.). They also tried fishing with Pa, but no fish were caught. I think the water was too hot for the fish.

The woods - I did not sleep very well at all. Between the hard bed, and some creature walking outside our cabin (I could hear the leaves crunching), cats were fighting, and the neighbors next to my parent's cabin, there was not much sleep.

Forgotten Camera & Pictures

I dug out my Point and Shoot camera to take on our camping trip. And, I was treated to some surprise pictures when loading the camping pictures. This first group of pictures is from Yoselin's Quinceanera last December. I had forgotten all about the pictures--there are actually pictures of ME! And, I like this picture of Juan and I.

These pictures were also on the camera. We took a trip to San Antonio last New Year's Eve and stayed at a fun resort. We are hoping to go back this summer when we can actually swim. They have an indoor pool, but Avery had just broken both of her arms.

Juan, Sterling and Avery all went bike riding. They did not have a bike that Ian could ride (and I had a headache), so we walked around and took a few pictures. Avery rode a bike with training wheels for extra safety. :)

Happy 9th Birthday Avery!

Avery turned 9 this past weekend. I can't believe it! Her birthday party did not go quite as planned (she requested that I not post all the details here.) She did not get to celebrate her birthday with her friends, but we will be doing something special for her birthday very soon!

She did receive a wonderful present from her grandparent's (a guitar!), along with some lessons. We have not started the lessons yet, but I will post a video soon when she is able to play something. We already had a broken guitar string (courtesy of little brother, Sterling).

She Makes it Look Easy - Book

I just finished reading the book "She Makes it Look Easy," by Marybeth Whalen. I heard about the book through Proverbs 31 Ministries. Marybeth is a writer for the daily devotional blog.

The book is about Ariel and her new neighbor, Justine. Ariel believes that Justine has it all--the perfect life. To Ariel, Justine makes life look so easy. Little does Ariel know that beneath that exterior is a different story. The book is written with different chapters narrated by each woman (Ariel & Justine), which allows you to see the point of view from each woman.

I think we all are guilty of doing this. We look at someone and think they seem to have it all together, But, we don't know what is really going on in their life or behind closed doors.

I actually read this book on the Kindle app on my phone. It was a great book to just pick up here and there, while waiting at swim lessons or the doctor's office. I really LOVE my new phone! It's almost time for more memory. :)

We finished out a great week with family VBS. Our church decided to hold VBS in the evenings this year and do everything as a family. We would start with dinner and then the VBS fun would begin. Avery and Sterling had a blast!

Family Reunion

We had our annual family reunion this past Memorial Day Weekend. We headed to Austin on Saturday afternoon to meet up with my cousins and their girls from Dallas and Austin. Avery and Sterling love hanging out with their cousins, Chandler and Taylor. They even had a sleepover in one of the hotel rooms. Sterling tried to have a sleepover, too; but, he got kind of sad when it was bedtime, so he ended up back in our room.

There was a great turnout of family. There were 16 of the 17 brothers and sisters in attendance and lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

It is so HOT, I'm really not sure why we have it this time of year, but oh well. It was great to see and visit with everyone.

End of Soccer Season

Avery and Sterling finished up the soccer season. It is getting too hot to play, so I'm glad it's over for now. As the Team Manager for Sterling's team, we got to take a free picture together.

We were able to make Sterling's end of season party; however, we missed Avery's party due to the Family Reunion. Here is Sterling getting his trophy (the lighting was terrible, but the pizza was delicious--check out his face).

I bought this "cupcake cake" - cupcakes made to look like a regular cake. It was very messy to pull apart, but the kids enjoyed it. I think next time I'll just get a regular cake or cupcakes.

Avery is officially done with 2nd grade! It is so hard to believe that she is halfway through her Elementary years. The picture above is her on Award's Day receiving her awards from Ms. P. Avery loved having Ms. P as a teacher this year. Ms. P made a comment on each student when she was giving out the awards. She described Avery as someone who always came to school with a smile and ready to learn. She said Avery does very well in all subjects! She is great at Math, Spelling, and a great reader. I am very proud of Avery. She did wonderful this year and is now moving on to 3rd grade!

End of the Year Party & Program - Sterling

Sterling had his last day of preschool and program. I really wish I had been able to record the program. I am hoping to get a copy from one of the other parents. Sterling sang extremely loud, and of course he was right by the microphone. The entire crowd was laughing, so that encouraged him to get even louder. He loved it! I was laughing so hard--I was in tears at the end of his song. He was such a little “rock star”. I’m not sure where all this came from (maybe it was the tie!), but he really loved to perform.

Zoo Field Trip – Avery

Since Ian was born, I have not been able to do much with Avery at school. Thankfully, my mom took care of Ian and Sterling last Friday while I was a chaperone on Avery’s class field trip. We went to the zoo. It was hot, but lots of fun.

Slow & Not So Steady

Ian is slowly starting to walk. The video above is him trying to walk at Avery's soccer game. He still would much rather crawl, but he is getting there.

Ian is starting to eat more table foods. He is a big meat eater. He will eat any meat that I give him (cut up into little pieces).

He also has started say a couple of words. He says "shoes". And, the usual "mama" and "dada". But, the funny thing he does when I ask him if he wants water or something or any question, he responds with something that sounds like, "I do" or just "do". He also shakes his head when he says it.

Soccer Soccer and more Soccer

Avery and Sterling both started playing soccer. We were a little surprised that Avery wanted to play this year. She played previously, but said she didn’t like it. So far, she really seems to like playing. Now our Saturdays are filled with soccer games.

Little Pudding Man

All was quiet one afternoon a couple of weeks ago. I was working away in the office. I am so happy that I am almost through with all my tax stuff and reports for this agency or that. I am so sick of deadlines. Anyway, I thought, “Ian sure is playing well.” Usually he’s right at my feet begging to be held. It was almost time to go pick up Avery at school. So, into the kitchen I went, and found this little man!

Pudding was everywhere. Ian was covered from head to toe. I scared him with my reaction—he started crying. At first I didn’t know what it was—I forgot that Sterling had pudding for lunch that he left on the table.

So, he ended up in the tub, and we were a little late picking up Avery.

Easter – 2010

After church on Easter Sunday, we headed to my mom’s house to have lunch and visit with my Aunt Ruthie, Aunt Irene, Uncle Mike, and friends. The kids enjoyed hunting eggs, silly string, water guns, and playing outside. These were not the best activities for their Easter dress clothes, but oh well (that’s what stain remover is for – right?), they had fun!

Surprise!??!!

We tried to have a surprise 60th birthday party for my mom this past Saturday. She would not leave the house, and the nasty rain and weather did not help. So, she found out about her party before all the guests arrived.

Even though the surprise was spoiled, it was still a great time with about 40 family and friends. Also, we had planned to have a lot of the party outside, but with the weather, we had to move indoors. It was COLD and windy!

I ordered this cake from a local bakery that I found online. They had “rave” reviews and I liked the pictures online. I ordered a white almond cake with raspberry filling. It was delicious—better than my wedding cake! I can’t wait to use them again!

My two sweet boys have been sick. Sterling recovered from his tonsillectomy. It took two full weeks before he was starting to feel somewhat better. And, it wasn’t long, and he was sick again with a nasty cough and ear infection. He was really sick—all he wanted to do was lay on the couch or sleep. I took him to the pediatrician two times last week. He finally is starting to feel better after a round of steroids and antibiotics. And, Juan and I can’t believe how much he is eating now. He is eating like a horse! He actually lost a few pounds with his tonsillectomy, so he’s a little on the skinny side. He could stand to gain a few pounds.

And, then there is Mr. Ian. He started getting sick just as Sterling was starting to feel better. He had a nasty cough and ear infection, too. He had such bad cough that he would throw up after coughing. And, he was not interested in playing or smiling, which is so unlike him. All he wanted to do is be held. We have been to the pediatrician’s office three times this week. I think we’ve been to the pediatrician’s office more in the last two weeks than we have in the last year. We had to give Ian breathing treatments, which he absolutely hates. He screams and cries through the entire treatment. I also tried to give him an antibiotic orally, but he would throw it up. So, he’s had to have 2 shots of an antibiotic this week. But, after his first shot, he started feeling better, which is the after picture. He also slept through the night!

Sterling the “Patient”

Sterling had his tonsils removed today, along with part of his adenoids that grew back from his previous surgery.

He has always been a pretty good little boy, but lately we had noticed a difference. He was having a hard time listening and just seemed to be very grouchy and tired. He also started wetting the bed, waking up at night, and snoring loudly. Turns out it is all related to sleep apnea. Hopefully, the surgery will make a difference.

Sterling was a great patient today. He first drank some medicine to help him relax. The picture above was taken after the medicine had kicked in. He was hilarious. I was trying not to laugh and him too much. He was talking about “jell-o clouds” and reaching out for a rope that wasn’t there. He kept trying to climb it from the bed. He also got the hiccups. He also said “That medicine tasted GOOOOOD!”

After about 45 minutes from when they took him back to the OR, the doctor came out and told us that all went well. The doctor said that days 4-6 after surgery can be the worst when things start to heal in the throat, so maybe the worst is still to come. After a couple hours in recovery and some vomiting, we were able to come home. This is what Sterling wants to do now.

Sterling is looking forward to all the popsicles, juices, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. The soft diet he is supposed to eat is basically his favorite foods.

Ian is 1!

I just realized. . .I posted this earlier in my attempt to catch up. Today Ian is 13 months old!

We celebrated Ian’s 1st birthday on January 22 (his real birthday) with a small gathering of family for dinner and cake.

Little Ian is very picky about what he eats. He didn’t even eat his giant cupcake! I thought for sure he was going to get all messy, but I also think he wasn’t feeling that great, either. He did sort of play with the icing on his hands.

Ian is not walking yet, but he sure can crawl fast. He can walk by holding onto a walker toy or furniture. He loves to talk and babble with you. He thinks he is really having a great conversation with you. He still does not like to ride in the car, but he is starting to get a little better.

Garage

We finished out our garage. I should have taken a before picture, but basically, we had an unfinished garage with exposed studs—nothing too pretty. This was Juan’s idea, and I have to admit, I wasn’t too excited about it at first. But, now I am really happy with the improvement.

It is a great place to watch TV while the kids are playing outside, to do crafts, play the Wii, have parties, let the men watch sports, or just hang out.

We added a window and a window unit with AC and heat. We also added 2 ceiling fans. I am anxious to see how cool it will be in the summer.

And, I can still park my car in the garage. Speaking of my car. . .

Goodbye! :-(

I said “goodbye” to my 2001 Toyota Sequoia. I purchased it brand new back in June 2001--this was the first year the Sequoias came out. I was even on the waiting list. It only had a little over 70,000 miles on it when we traded it in for another Sequoia.

HELLO!

We were ~~in desperate need~~ in desperate "want" for a car that had an aisle in the middle that one of the kids could walk to the back easily. The kids love the DVD player. And, I love the power back door, navigation system, integrated phone, and lots of other little “extras".”

Cocoa came to visit

Sterling’s preschool class has adopted a rescue “pet” named Cocoa. We were lucky enough to have Cocoa come and stay with us for a long weekend. Each student from his class takes a turn bringing Cocoa home. We took Cocoa to the store, church, and gymnastics with us.

We then had to write in Cocoa’s journal about our adventures. Sadly, we had to return to school.. Sterling really enjoyed having Cocoa come to stay.

My Girl

Sterling and Ian were baptized on December 27, 2009. Both boys did very well with getting the water splashed on their heads. Ian even smiled, and he was not feeling good that day.

Whether you believe in baptizing children or allowing the child to grow up and make their own decision to be baptized, we chose to baptize our children. We believe that the baptism symbolizes our commitment to raising our children in the Church.

We had a wonderful Christmas. Here are the kids enjoying their Christmas gifts on Christmas morning. Avery and Sterling received bikes from their grandparents. And, Ian received his little motorcycle that he loves. They also got scooters and other small toys. We tried to keep it to a minimum! Juan would say that we did not succeed at that!

Our big gift was from Santa—a Wii for the family.

Where do I start? I haven’t posted in a while. Life is crazy sometimes. I’ve been trying to improve my time management skills and prioritize what’s really important to me. So, my blog has taken a backseat. I do enjoying documenting and posting our activities, but other things have just been a little more important lately. Also, I just think it is a little extra crazy for me right now—a very needy one year old, 3 kids, tax season and business stuff. I will “catch up” soon with updated pictures.

Avery and Sterling were so excited. He came to our backyard and was reading the letters Avery and Sterling had sent to him.

He was also checking his list!

Avery said, "He put a red check by my name! We are so lucky!" I don't think I have ever seen her so excited. Sterling was very excited, but a little scared. He didn't want to get too close. And, even Avery was a little timid.

So Sick of Being Sick

In early November, I came down with the flu. I did have a regular flu shot about a month before, so not sure if it was H1N1 or what. I went to the doctor and was given Tamiflu and started feeling better.

Then, Thanksgiving Day, I started feeling terrible again. I went to the a walk-in Clinic the next day and was diagnosed with an ear infection. I started on the antibiotics and started feeling better after a few doses. I had forgotten how bad an ear infection can make you feel.

And, now for the past 4 days, I have been feeling terrible again with a fever and horrible sore throat. I went to the walk-in Clinic today, and now I have strep throat! I don't think I have been this sick in the last 5 years combined. I started on my antibiotics, but sadly I think this puts a damper on our Christmas Eve plans. I'm sad that I'm going to miss church.

So far, Sterling and Ian just seem to have minor colds. In between all this sickness, a stomach virus swept through our house, and Avery, Sterling, and Juan were all sick. Thankfully, I did not get that! I'm just so sick of being sick! It's really hard on everyone when Mom gets sick, and this is such a busy time of year.

After several attempts at taking a family photo for our Christmas card, this is the final card. The weather just did not want to cooperate. It was actually starting to rain, and my hair did not stay straight in the later shots.

I finally got them in the mail today! I never wait this long to send out Christmas cards, but it’s been a hectic few weeks with school events, sickness (myself and kid’s included), and my mom’s knee surgery. Merry Christmas everyone!

Friday was a fun day for Avery. She went to a fun party with friends right after school where she made lots of fun crafts and ate yummy treats.

Then after the party, Avery, Sterling, Ian, and I enjoyed Storytime at our church. Everyone wears pajamas, sings songs, and listens to Christmas themed stories. After storytime, we all got to enjoy hot cocoa and cookies and make a fun ornament.

The first picture of "Santa Baby Ian" is my new favorite picture. He looked so cute in his Santa outfit and was so happy. I didn't get to take too many pictures. I was by myself--Juan had his company Christmas function the same evening.

Poor Avery had an accident playing outside. She tripped and fell face first on the concrete. Her poor nose is scraped and swollen. But, she is taking it very well. I told her she looks like Rudolph, and she smiled. I only hope she does okay at school tomorrow.

We had a rare treat yesterday – SNOW!

Even Ian was excited watching it come down.

And, I must say, I was excited, too! It was a very pretty change. We couldn’t wait for Avery to get out of school. They did dismiss 2 hours early.

It was a lot of fun and something new, but we decided it was too cold to play out for very long (and the temperature was dropping as the day went on).

Halloween 2009

We had a fun Halloween this year. I spent the day finishing up Avery's costume and baking the Cupcake Pops by Bakerella. You can see mine here. They were both more time consuming than I originally thought.

Sterling was "Super Mario" this year. Ian was a "Train Conductor", and Avery was "My Little Cupcake." I made her costume. I started with laundry basket, poster board, batting, spray paint, ribbon, florist wire, plastic straws, and some pom-poms.

I cut the bottom out of a laundry basket. Then I folded several poster boards accordian style. The trickiest part was figuring out how to attach the poster board to the laundry basket. I finally decided to punch holes and use florist wire to attach it. I then spray painted it silver. I used ribbon like suspenders to keep the basket on. The batting was the icing of the cupcake. I took different colored pom-poms and cut up straws and attached them to the batting with hot glue. I also cut it with a scallopped edge to look more like icing. We finally decided to have a hot pink cherry candy on top of the cupcake--I created a ball out of felt and polyfil with the little sewing that I do know how to do and hot glued it on top of a head band. Avery did look very cute as a cupcake.

We went trick or treating to a few houses here in the neighborhood. We were even joined by a "scary" ghost aka PA.

We then finished off our Halloween by going to a fun party with friends.
We did not have too many trick or treaters this year. I think part of the reason is we are on the back of the cul-de-sac and there is only one other house in the cul-de-sac that hands out candy. So, kids probably think its not worth their while to walk all the way to our house. And, unfortunately we have a lot of leftover candy, along with what Avery and Sterling received.

Here is a picture of Avery, Sterling, and the tallest ghost I have ever seen going up to someone's door. I can't believe my dad kept the costume on the whole time we were out.

Ian - 9 Months

Ian is now 9 months old. He has hit several milestones this month--Ian has been a busy boy!

He is finally eating a little more baby food. I know he doesn't eat as much as the typical 9 month old, but he now eats yogurt, pears, mangos, oatmeal (baby cereal), Cheerios, and his favorite, Gerber puffs. I really need to work on vegetables, but I mostly get a nasty face when I give him vegetables.

He has several new teeth (6 teeth in all have cut through).

We said goodbye to the indoor "baby" swing this month and hello to the outdoor swing, which he loves. He leans back, kick his feet, and relaxes!

Ian has begun to crawl! He is also pulling himself to standing and taking a few steps holding onto furniture. I have to watch him all the time as he is really into exploring now.

He has also learned to kiss. Or, he at least makes the smack noise if I make it to him. So, we blow kisses to each other. And, Ian has started babbling more--he now says mama, dada, gaga, and lots of squeals.

He had his 9 month old checkup today. It was a several hour ordeal as he had to have blood drawn for a routine CBC and iron check. We spent lots of time waiting, but he was very good. Poor thing he was poked so much today--TB skin test, 2nd dose of flu vaccine, Hep B vaccine, 1st attempt at blood in the arm, and finally got the blood from his finger.

He weighs 21 lbs. (75th percentile) and is 28 1/4 inches (50th percentile).

Race for the Cure

I spent a fun Saturday morning (October 3) walking with friends for a great cause. It was a 5K walk, along with a long walk to and from the car, so we walked at least 7 miles. After the walk, we had a yummy lunch of Mexican food.

We also had the cutest shirts - "We are walking for these GIRLS" was on the front - "And for our girls" (with a cute picture of our daughters on the back).

There were lots of people walking and running for breast cancer.

This was also the first time I had been away from Ian for an extended period of time.

Visitor

Last Tuesday this little guy appeared at our back door. He had no tags or collar, and seemed to have no desire to leave our backyard.

I could tell he was someone's dog. He seemed well fed; although, he was a puppy and like to chew and jump. I should have taken a picture of our backyard while he was there. He made quite a mess! He even dug up some fresh mulch that Juan had just put down. And, everytime he would jump on Avery and Sterling, he would scare them to death.

We asked around the neighborhood, but no one seemed to know where he came from. I even posted some signs around the neighborhood. I continued to feed him and hoped that we would find his owner. I just couldn't imagine us keeping him. I would love to have a dog, but I just don't have the time to give a dog the attention they deserve.

So, Thursday afternoon we were driving home from school and Avery said, "MOM! There's a lost dog sign--it said a blue heeler." I thought she might have been imagining things, but I turned around, and sure enough it was a sign for a lost 3 month old male blue heeler. This had to be the owners! I pulled over immediately and called. Sure enough it was the owners. The little guy's name was Rascal and he was over a mile from home. I still don't know why or how he ended up in our backyard. I'm so happy we found his home and he just came to visit.

U2 Concert

Juan and I celebrated his birthday by attending the U2 concert. We had never seen them live, and it was so awesome. They sounded great especially singing the classics like I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, One, Stuck in a Moment, Sunday Bloody Sunday, With or Without You, and Where the Streets Have No Name.

I did not bring my regular camera, so these pictures are not the greatest from my Blackberry. Our seats were pretty good; although, we did have part of the cool stage blocking our view at times. The guys did make their way around the stage several times where we could see them a little closer.

We laughed and said we were too old to stand in the pit. I will say this was one of the best concerts I have ever been to!

Soccer Fun - Sterling

Sterling had his first soccer game this morning. I was a little nervous because our first practice was a little rough (he and some of his other teammates cried for a good portion of the first practice). But surprisingly, the Chargers played very well (especially for 3 year olds).

Sterling almost scored a goal, and several of his teammates did score. Although, officially the league does not keep score. Juan is also the COACH!

Ian – 8 Months!

I missed posting this on the actually date (22nd) Ian hit the 8 month mark. It’s been so crazy lately with activities, school, etc.

Ian still does not seem too interested in baby food. Some days he eats about 1/2 jar to a jar. I’ve tried yogurt, too. He really likes to feed himself little baby cereal puffs and is still very happy with his milk. He doesn’t seem to be missing the food so much—he is still a little rolly poley.

He is almost crawling. He gets up, rocks, and either dives forward or slides backwards. It will not be long. He also gets up and does “pushups”! I don’t know how he can lift his whole body!

Ian said his first word – MAMA! Sterling and Avery both said Dada first, so Ian made my heart melt. I love to hear him. For about the last two weeks, he has been saying, “mama mama mama” over and over again.

No doctor visit this month, so I don’t have any measurements. He does have two cute little teeth on the bottom that you can see in the picture.

Sterling’s First Day of Preschool

I just dropped Sterling off for his first day of preschool. He was so happy and excited. He did not cry at all. I was so proud of him. Only I shed a few tears in the parking lot.

He was not too excited about carrying his school bag. He said it looks like a purse! This is a bag provided by the preschool that all the kids carry.

I was also glad to meet a family from our church. Victoria is in his class and also had VBS with Sterling.

We were running a little late, but we found his new friends on their blanket. They all meet up at 8:45 a.m. for devotionals and songs with the parents.

Then at 9:00 a.m. they line up and head to the classroom. I know he will have a great time making new friends and learning from his teachers Ms. Carol and Ms. Danielle. Sterling is already “in love” with Ms. Danielle. I love this picture of him. He was so excited. The cute little girl with the yellow bow is Victoria. I can’t wait to hear all about his day!

Getting in the Swing of Things

It seems we are falling into a routine now that Avery has been back at school for over a week now.

I can't believe I have been cooking every night, and we haven't eaten out since our trip to Galveston, except for after church on Sunday. It must be a record for us! I started blogging about our dinners on my recipe blog. You can check it out here.

My house isn't as clean as I would like, and my laundry isn't caught up. I haven't had my friend that was helping me clean come in over 2 months. I miss the laundry not being caught up and a cleaner house, but I am trying to save the money for a new car. We still can't decide exactly what we want. I am just not "in love" with any particular car. And, Juan and I are debating over a minivan vs. SUV. One is more convenient with the kids (and that's what I'm looking for) and definitely cheaper, but Juan doesn't like minivans. Have you tried loading 3 kids all in car seats or boosters (in the Texas heat)?

Our mornings are running a little smoother thanks to closet organizers. The past 2 Sundays, we have picked out outfits for the week and put them in their daily slot. I've seen these in catalogs for $20 and up, but I just made our own from a $7 organizer from Walmart and a little paint pen. I tried to do this last year with Avery, but we didn't keep it up. I bought one from Target this year for Sterling.

Avery and Sterling had dentist appointments this past Wednesday. Everything was great--no cavities for both! Avery currently has 3 teeth that are loose (a bottom tooth and her 2 front teeth).

Back to School - Avery

I can't believe it is Avery's first day of school again. Now she is a big 2nd grader. I don't feel as sad when I dropped her off for Kindergarten. But, Sterling had a hard time leaving her at school this morning. He had huge tears rolling down his face when we were walking out of the school. He misses his big sister, playmate, and best friend. I'm sure he will make friends when he starts preschool in a couple of weeks.

Things to pray:

1) Your child's teacher - They spend a significant amount of time with your child and have an enormous influence on their year. Pray that they have a Christ-like heart and a love for children.

2) Your child's friends - Pray that they are kind and loving. Pray that your child can share Jesus with them if they don't already know Christ.

3) Your child's academics - Schoolwork loses it's luster for some children after a time. Pray that your child will love learning this year and absorb all that's required of them. Ask that this love of learning never cease.

4) Safety at your school - We live in an unpredictable world. Pray for safety on your child's campus and safety for all of the schools in our country.

5) Pray for your Principal/School Leaders - Decisions made by Principals and School Leaders have an incredible impact on our area. Ask that decisions be made in the best interest of all and that single agendas be left to the wayside. Pray for protection over these leaders and for their courage when standing up for Christian values.

6) Yourself - Pray that you, as the parent, will make wise decisions regarding your child's education - academic and spiritual. Ask for guidance and for strength as you guide your child through this year.

These are wonderful reminders to pray for on the first day of school and every day for that matter. As Avery is getting older, I find myself wondering if other kids are nice to her. I think my biggest worry is that there will be mean kids or someone will hurt her feelings. I know she is in HIS hands, and Juan and I have tried to teach her what is best and the most important things. My biggest prayer is that Avery will encounter kind friends and school mates. I hope she will continue to be self confident and grow into the beautiful little lady that she is.

Toes in the Sand - Galveston

We spent the past weekend in Galveston with my parents. I'm not sure what I was thinking in planning two trips back to back and the weekend before school at that, but it was a great trip. We all had a great time together in adjoining rooms. This was a big thrill for Sterling and Avery. We stayed at the Moody Gardens Hotel, and went to Moody Gardens on Saturday. We all really enjoyed watching the penguins at the Aquarium and seeing all the neat fish and sea creatures. We also went to the Rainforest Pyramid at Moody. The Rainforest Pyramid was destroyed by Hurricane Ike, but they have since repaired it.

It was very hot on Saturday, so we didn't hit the beach until Saturday evening. This had to be a highlight for everyone. I especially loved watching Ian. He was SO excited. He was actually squealing and kicking his legs. He loved watching the waves and putting his toes in the sand.

After the beach, we headed to Ben and Jerrys for some ice cream.

It was a fun trip, but my mom and I both agreed that we had no desire to ever return to Galveston. Every restaurant and restroom we went to was extremely filthy, even at the hotel.

Cheer Camp

Avery finished up summer with a cheer camp on Friday. She had fun learning new cheers with her friend, Grace. After the camp, they put on a show for the parents. I did not get the best photos from where I was sitting.

I love the shirt she got that says, "Cheerleaders for Christ." Avery really seems to like cheering, so we are going to try a cheer class this semester.
